Vicki Bolen’s Memorial at Little Bird on Saturday, June 3rd, 10am-4pm. I think this guest artist idea is working OK so far. Both Georgia and Rose Mari had some sales and got some new exposure. Neither will be partying on Ibiza with Jake from State Farm with their sales, but it seem worthwhile. June, however, is Vicki month. There will be her official memorial at Little Bird on Saturday, June 3, 10am to 4pm, where you can sing, poess, read out lout, scream, dance, tell a funny joke or story, come just to remember her creative genius, and that she was a much nicer person than her husband (just ask Goldie).
I am getting used to the fact that these newsletters are part of my life now. I always write them with Vicki structure in mind. So this month the guest artist is Rose Marie Prins, a mixed media artist we met last year when she moved here from Florida. People keep dropping in on Saturdays from 12 to 3 to visit at Little Bird. This month, First Friday is May 5, and Little Bird will be open from 4 to 7pm. At 7:30, I head over to Tractor Brewing on 4th Street to compete in Rusty Rutherfords monthly comedy contest. Then, on May 8th, I head up to Taos for my first headlining comedy gig at The Burger Stand and Ale House.
It is an odd thing that I, not Vicki, is composing an artist newsletter about art. I am better suited for a podcast about how to compose a joke that will equal the laughter of slipping on a banana peel. Is that a 3 banana peel joke or just a 2? But I have recently realized the importance of owning an art gallery. It can be a vehicle for showcasing artists who may not have access to other more established art galleries. It can be a place where other galleries can decide if they want to exhibit their work. This month, the guest artist is Georgia Santa-Maria, noted poet and photographer.
This is the first Little Bird newsletter without Vicki, the true Little Bird. The fact that there is enough innovative art in the studio to probably last for years is due to Vicki’s genius and indefatigable work ethic. Vicki often featured other artists and during March it will be Dianna Mullens, jeweler extraordinaire.
Tis the season to support local artisans and community. Little Bird de Papel will be open for Small Business Saturday November 26, 10am-4pm.
Meet the Artist on November 5 from Noon-2p—Louise Coleman, mixed media artist, will bring a work-in-progress and art items. She’ll chat about what goes into her process and how she layers the MAGIC!
We in New Mexico always look forward to the arrival of the sandhillcranes, who grace us yearly with their presence. And of course, Balloons, Balloons, and more Balloons. Vicki’s art does not include representations of balloons or buffaloes, but feel free to snap selfies with the scrumptious cranes on her mural, along with all the other avian friends of the cranes.
September will include a continuation of the paper dolls exhibit for those who missed last month. Also a chance to see Vicki’s newest summer creations. Like Peewee’s Playhouse, the usual characters should be there like Richard with his magic word dice, and Bubbles the dancing dog.
First Friday—August 5, 5-8pm at Little Bird de Papel—Paper Dolls: Evolution and Articulation featuring artists: Dale Harris, Louisa Barkalow, Margy O’Brien, Ginger Rice,Terry Garrettt, Esther Feske, and Vicki Bolen. This fun project manifests what seven adult artists presently relate to early memories of paper dolls and their environment.
Potters Melissa Alexander, Jillian Maresco and Rosalie Huang will be featured at Little Bird for the Artscrawl on Friday, July 1, 4-8pm.
First Friday—June 3rd 5-8—Featured artist Richard Wolfson, poet—Richard writes spontaneous poetry, some from dreams, some that emanate back from Woodstock days.
Music and dancing by Tropezon Andado (name of band translates to “stumbling walk,” an homage to Yoruba Andado)—musicians are Rico Guillermo, Mark Horst, Ari Posner and Alyson Steinman
AABA Art’s Crawl at Little Bird de Papel—First Friday, May 6th, 5–8pm—Featuring the book arts of Libros and Santa Fe BAG. 20 years of collaborative books by the members. There are many innovative and unique shapes and forms to view. Our Newsletter is Back!
Update of my pandemic year, thanks to Zoom I was able to learn so many new challenging origami folds. There were many more conventions that brought so many people together both nationally and internationally.
More reflections from Vicki and a “Bowls on Sale” plan!
Help Feed New Mexicans Who Need Help
Help Feed New Mexicans Who Need Help—For each original origami piece purchased, I will make a $50 donation to Roadrunner Food Bank, which will provide 250 meals per art piece.
Because our last pandemic in 2015 was the e[BOWL]a virus, it seems in poor taste to sell bowls in the middle of our present one. So please
stay home, stay safe, and please keep Off Center in your meditations and charitable contributions.
