You’re invited to the Placitas Solstice Reading on December 21, 2019

I don’t celebrate New Year’s Eve, in the South Valley, we just try to avoid the bullets in the sky.

For the past 10 years, I celebrate the close of the year on Solstice Day at the Presbyterian Church in Placitas, New Mexico.

Each year, the church holds a candlelight poetry reading on the solstice evening, starting at 7:00 PM, where poems about solstice light are read in a darkened room lit by a single candle. I have been reading there each year for a decade I consider this the Superbowl of poetry readings.

Last 2 stanzas of my poem for this year

Flowers pray to their departed cathedral,
demon dancers flicker at her winter throne,
no apologies for the significance of a disappearance,
the dark solitude of envy, her battle cry.

The lower world where all edges are circular,
the upper world where all reflections signify possibility.
